  1. Great creek rod

Posted by John Duncan - Telluride Angler on 8th Feb 2011

I fished the G2 773-4 on Hermosa Creek, a small stream near Durango that pools up nicely and averages 15-20 feet across. After fishing the rod, I was excited to recommend it to anglers who prefer graphite rods in short lengths and line weights. I generally prefer Fiberglass for rods less than 8 feet in length, because I’m crazy about the sensation of casting slow action rods in close quarters.

The G2 773-4 is one of best short graphite rods I have ever fished. It is a fine representative of the G2 series: true to its line weight, light in the hand and very easy to cast. I find it hard to compare the actions of short graphite fly rods, because they flex and recoil so much more quickly than 9’ rods. Scott calls this a medium-action rod. I will just say that it is very easy to cast (given my preference for slower action rods) and truly sweet in the hand. It flexes into the mid section on 20 foot casts. For me, that’s just about right for a small stream rod. It can handle a dry fly with a modest dropper, but it is sweetest with a medium-sized dry fly on a 9-10 foot leader.

Fly line recommendation: Rio Gold WF3F (http://www.tellurideangler.com/products/Rio-Gold-Fly-Line.html)
